There is no denying the fact that Nigeria has more than its fair share of national disasters. The decades after independence from British colonial rule in 1960 saw the overthrow strategic nation in sub-political uncertainty and economic disintegration is. Policies not included and a historical over-reliance on oil exports has left the vast majority of Nigerians in abject poverty and terrible conditions in human development. The return to democracy in 1999 finally brought with it the promise of positive change, as Abuja announced ambitious plans, the downward spiral in the world rankings and effect radical change in the lives of his people to reverse. For Nigeria, the proverbial light came at the end of the tunnel in the form of rapid business development, former President Obasanjo O bet that his country’s top 20 economies in the world before 2020. The thrust of this vision was by the current UM President Yar’Adua was postponed, in the direction of Nigeria, the repair and sustainable economic growth.
Among the many challenges facing today in Nigeria, youth unrest and violent crime that is probably painful. Although reliable data are lacking, local media, that half of Nigeria’s young population of 148 million people, 95% are unemployment1. Decades of economic stagnation and poverty have conspired to drive much of this figure to crime and violence from the beginning. There is no doubt that the long-term objectives of the country permanently is its ability to recover the power of youth unrest and mobilize its economic potential associated.
Basic challenges
Before arriving to fight in the way against youth unrest, it is important to examine the development challenges facing Nigerians in general and youth in particular.
* Deficit of the country’s infrastructure runs into billions, a situation that seriously hampers business development. In July this year the government announced that it billion.2 150 over ten years for investment in various infrastructure sectors, first of all requires energy, roads and railway lines. Business opportunities are not evenly between rural and urban areas spread, a condition that new business development and expansion of existing hexagons. A rail network virtually non-existent and the very poor road conditions have combined to further the economic environment and investment in the country to prevent climate.
* Electricity is another concern in this context. Availability of food is far from the application, to say the least, and the supply is largely irregular, even in relatively developed urban areas. Most companies are forced to operate on expensive generators during frequent breakdowns leave many others from burglaries and other criminal activities.
* The communications infrastructure to many calls for the massive restoration and growth, particularly in the areas of telecommunications and the Internet. These two sectors were in focus under former President Obasanjo, whose government has launched massive economic stimulus packages, the range and the infiltration of the Internet and telephone services to improve. Nigeria existing and new entrepreneurs are still significant obstacles related to the markets and potential investors face. Although there was a significant development in the communications sector in the last ten years, is still an enormous challenge.
* Entrepreneurship Development was also hindered by a variety of financial factors, is limited access to credit for small businesses most. The absence of pension credits and understanding of the realities of business life is a central element of concern, and the predominance of loans through debt to equity.
* The very low educational standards, restricted access to training programs, the limited use of technology and the high cost of doing business in Nigeria other aspects that require a solution to the country rapid growth of entrepreneurship.
The way forward
Obviously there are various problems, the negative impact on business development in Nigeria. For his significant population of young, have decades of underinvestment in the social sector and the failure of job creation programs combined to create a climate of unrest. The explosive mix of poverty, rampant inflation and unemployment to a situation where crime is very often the only way out to survive.
Reversing this trend calls for a fundamental change in the official outlook and strong changes in four key areas:
* Education and Training: From the perspective of enterprise development and youth empowerment, the importance of education and sound practice are not easily overestimated. The Nigerian government appears to understand the extent of their significance and successive regimes have political decisions in this radical sense. Before leaving office in 2007, President Obasanjo compulsory education for entrepreneurial students from all disciplines in Nigeria. The present dispensation under the chairmanship of Mr Yar’Adua is still very important for vocational education and training programs for the youth by equipping them for secure business needs. However, these measures must be standardized throughout the education system and improving quality to meet current conditions.
* Government Programs: In 1999, the federal government to promote some important measures for business development, undertaken including the establishment of the National Employment Agency and Medium Enterprises Bank of Industry. However, further measures needed to enhance effective participation of youth in development programs and the development of social consensus on the major macroeconomic issues. Encourage youth leadership in public and private sector is to remain a key to their full economic potential.
* Financial Restructuring: access to capital is one of the biggest setbacks in the promotion of youth entrepreneurship, Nigeria, has on the design and implementation of radical policy changes in the financial sector focus. Banks and financial institutions require Outlook orientation and awareness of the needs of small businesses as part of efforts to increase financial access to emerging companies.
* Obstacles in Rural Areas: Special attention should be given opportunities in the rural areas which, significantly behind urban areas, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Caution should implement the policy, the promotion of businesses and social issue in the changing landscape of Nigeria.
The problem of youth unrest in the largest second-largest African economy can not be considered independently of its greatest economic challenges. Nigeria has its historical failure to recognize the efforts of its young people’s needs and find creative solutions to mobilize enough energy for their sustainable and inclusive prosperity.
